In a day when names of churches can mean almost anything (or nothing!), what is the significance of "The Heights"? When this church was originally founded in the 1950's, it was planted in a specific brand-new subdivision called "Prescott Heights". In fact, this subdivision still exists under the same name and is located just up from Prescott High School. The founders named the church after the area in which it was located. It was known as Prescott Heights Baptist Church for years. A couple of years later, the church decided to become independent. At that time, the name was changed to "Prescott Heights Church". It wasn't until the church out-grew its little building and moved to its present location that that name became a bit of a problem. It would no longer be located in the Prescott Heights subdivision, and we desperately wanted to reach Chino Valley, Prescott Valley, and Dewey. Keeping "Prescott" in the name seemed unwise. So, for lack of a better idea, we just dropped the word "Prescott" from the name and left "The Heights" in tact. Many people wonder if the name has some sort of significance with reaching for higher heights or climbing to the heights. Those are nice thoughts, but it was simply a logistical change. People joked at the time that if we continued to shorten the name, we would be eventually known as simply "The". We hope not. |
